BENGALURU: Luggage seems to be the next product category that will see online retail rivals Flipkart and Amazon India battle it out for customers. 

Flipkart is betting big on luggage despite lagging behind in market share in comparison with Amazon. But Rishi Vasudev, vice-president for fashion, home, and furniture at Flipkart, is confident of outpacing its competitor by the end of this year, riding on the back of Flipkart’s range of exclusive offerings and private labels

“Right now, the gap between the market share of Amazon and Flipkart is marginal,” said Vasudev. “We expect the market share to tilt in our favour to 60-40 by the end of this year.” 

Amazon India launched the luggage category on Amazon Fashion in 2014 and claims to have experienced a growth of over 100% with a selection of more than 500 brands. “There is an increasing demand for travel merchandise across the country, with respect to the same, luggage is an important category for us,” said Arun Sirdeshmukh, business head at Amazon Fashion.
